Freelance Pieces

From time to time, I have written freelance features for newspapers like the Concord Monitor, the Brattleboro Reformer and the Valley News, as well as feature and cover stories for HippoPress. Because these are not regular gigs, I have the liberty to do some fairly funky topics. These are some of the stories I have the most fun with:

Truly Disgusting Dog Treats: This is a piece I wrote for the Concord Monitor about the fact that pet owners are now paying big bucks for second-hand meat products.(1999, Concord Monitor)

Dandelions: This isn't really a food piece or a gardening one, but an unholy hybrid between the two that I did for the Valley News. (1999, Valley News)

Houseplants For the Cheap and Clumsy: This one really is a gardening piece, but one written by the most inept gardener in North America. (1999, Valley News)

Two Christmas pieces: I was asked to do a couple of short pieces by the Valley News in Lebanon, New Hampshire for a Christmas supplement. The assignments were to write about The History of Christmas Stockings and a personal Christmas Memory. This could have been pretty hokey, but it was actually pretty fun. I later revamped the fireplace story as an Almost Gruntled. (1999, Valley News)

Barbershop Odyssey: A piece I did for HippoPress on why its harder to find a barber than you might think. (2000, HippoPress.com)

*Census Enumeration And The Cursed Shirt: This is a piece that touches on the horrors involved in my experiences as a Census Enumerator. (2000, HippoPress.com)

Booksigning: Why science fiction booksignings are not as geeky as you'd like to think. (2000, HippoPress.com)

The Freudian Jungle of Teaching Interviews: A piece on the ins and outs of getting hired as a teacher. (2000, HippoPress.com)

JennaFest 2000: One of the most popular figures on the first "Survivor" television series was Jenna Lewis, a woman from Franklin, New Hampshire. Well, she doesn't actually live there anymore, but she did at one time, and that was good enough for her hometown, who decided to throw a festival to celebrate her notariety. HippoPress decided to devote an entire edition to covering the festivities and I wrote the cover story. This seemed like a dubious idea at best, as I had never seen the show. (2000, HippoPress.com)

Dating Miss New Hampshire: HippoPress Manchester sent me to cover the 2001 Miss New Hampshire pagent. The paper's archrival, the Union Leader has traditionally sponsored this event and emphasized that it is NOT a beauty pagent, but a scholarship program. (I've applied for many scholarships in my life and - thankfully - never had to dress in a swimsuit and high heels to do so.) I was sent to cover the pagent with the slant of taking a more personal point of view of the event. (2001, HippoPress Manchester)

Miss-Apprehensions (Dating Miss New Hampshire, Part 2): This was the follow-up to the piece I'd written on trying to date a beauty queen. (2001, HippoPress Manchester)

Oktoberfest: This was a piece I did for HippoPress Manchester which examined an important, often overlooked aspect of this time of the year - just what exactly is the relationship between Oktoberfest and balloon animals? (2001, HippoPress Manchester)

Karaoke: This was part of an ensemble piece that the staff of HippoPress did about different aspects of Manchester's nightlife. (2003, HippoPress Manchester)

Snorkeling the Turgid Waters of the Merrimack: This is an exploration of the major river that runs through Manchester from an unusual perspective. (2003, HippoPress Manchester)
